Building Community Connections: Hula and Storytelling

November 3, 2025 @ 11:30 am - 12:30 pm

In collaboration with the Teaching and Learning Centre, over three lunchtime sessions, we will learn some hula basics, and Hawaiian stories about Aloha and Kuleana (responsibility).

Emily Carr University faculty member Dr. Poh Tan has been a hula haumana (student of hula) for over 20 years and trained with Kumu Josie de Baat of Halau Kia’i O Ka Hula. Poh is of Nyonya heritage from Malaysia and she immigrated to Vancouver with her family over 30 years ago. Hula has been an integral part of Poh’s being, research, work, and life as the teachings of Kumu de Baat continue to guide her as an educator, scholar and mother.

Please wear comfortable pants and if you have a sarong or wrap, please bring it to wrap around your hips. We will hula in our bear feet to thoroughly connect to the ground. An alternative form of hula noho (sitting hula) will also be offered for those who may limitations in mobility. To learn more about Poh: hulahalau.ca.
